Fashion Filosofy’s Fashion Week Favourites
DCU Fashion Show 2007, Nokia, UCD, celebrity, designer, street style April 1st, 2007This week Fashion Filosofy attended some of Dublin’s most stylish events, cameras at the ready we snapped some great shots and these are some of our favourites.

There’s a very good reason the divine Miss Caroline Morahan won The Most Stylish of the Night at the Peter Marks VIP Style Awards and it was this gorgeous satin number. Created by home grown designer Kathy de Stafford, we love the intricate buttoned back and plunging neckline.

They say sex sells and sex definitely sells clothes! An expanse of bare skin and rippled abs showed off DCU’s student Fashion Show creations to great effect. Despite the irresistible models, we did manage to notice the clothes as well. Our attention was drawn to the very trendy way the show was styled, with hoodies worn as head pieces and tight fitting jeans with casual canvas trainers.

This fabulously feminine creation was our favourite aspect of the Nokia Young Fashion Designer Awards held at The Olympia. The work of Deirdre Brennan, who quite rightly won first place at the awards, is a collage of fabric and appliqué coming together to create a gown worthy of a princess. Check out the flowers and sequins which display an incredible attention to detail.

Grafton Design Academy students display some of this season’s hottest trends at the UCD student fashion show at The Point. Our favourite elements of these outfits are the hip, ankle length boots teamed with a sexy mini, the cute Mary Janes with a vintage flare and the uber trendy gold, metallic shift dress.

Sorry, but this does not do it for me, on many levels which I will explain in a minute. You will probably not post this comment as you seem to edit alot of them that’s not completeley in tandem with your view but I can only hope.
Hey it could open up ave’s for discussion. That’s the beauty of a blog the way it develops etc.
Here goes:-
The color was not the best choice, for her it’s too weddingy like even though it is in stark contrast with her coloring
The style is too costumey and what makes it more costumey are those gloves!!
April 2nd, 2007 at 3:57 pm
Re the lady who ‘won’.
Would not have been my choice. Some elements work the choice of clutch and that wonderful attitude(check out that pose).
The dress ayy ayy ayy accessorised with the gloves along with the updo. The color is sooo wrong for her as is the style for her bodytype.
This comment is not meant to be mean btw
April 2nd, 2007 at 7:41 pm
agree with previous. The bottom makes it look very ‘Hello Dolly’ not modern at all. Toss the gloves too, she would have looked vavavoom in red given her beautiful pale skin and dark hair.
Could analyse this to death but shan’t

hey anonymous 2.50! it’s ‘weddingy’ cos it is one. it’s by a wedding designer Kathy de Stafford…re not posting comments that are not ‘in tandem with our view’, actually it’s not about our view at all, style is subjective, we take pics of people on the street,of fashion events, of people in the fashion industry, people making fashion waves in Ireland, whoever…what they wear is their own business, and if it works for them, hey it works for them, so be it.
we’re not here to judge or criticise or be nasty, we’re here to celebrate all that fashion is, it may not ‘do it for you’ or me but it did it for her…hey it won her an award, 250 people can’t be all wrong!
and by the way we have met Caroline in the person tonnes of times, not only is she absolutely stunning, but she has a good fashion sense most of the time(she’s the presenter of a fashion show in Ire, she should know)I guess you may not know this but she’s known for her carefree and fashion-fun attitude (which is what she might have gone for here), it’s a pity cos pcitures don’t really do much justice to her…i like the dress but the colour wouldn’t do it for me either, I’m not a fan of white!!! thanks for the comment
April 3rd, 2007 at 3:23 am
I did think when commenting on dress that the pics did not do this beautiful girl justice.Did not mean to be nasty. Judge objectively yes! Did not realize K de S was a wedding dsnr and do not doubt that it was made with a very deft hand. It is about your view don’t you think given your comments with each posting but the beauty of the comment box is to do just that, comment give an op be it good or bad subjective or objective. Hey it’s not so bad that one would disagree with 250 peeps is it. p.s who did she marry!
April 3rd, 2007 at 3:39 am
Hey Arsh,
Are you of the same opinion with the 250 peeps who gave this award. C’mon be totally honest, as a matter of interest were there any other awards such as 2nd or 3rd by any chance.
Just because one is a fashion show presenter of any show does not make them all knowing about fashion, for e.g many famous presenters here in the states dress abominably inmho but it is subjective. When you visit try watch the style channel and you’ll see what I mean. Take other fashion icons Karl Lagerfeld for instance I happen to think that he looks hideous most of the time but he is considered a demigod.
April 3rd, 2007 at 8:27 am
hey anon 2.23. i know you weren’t being nasty, i was just talking generally…re our posting with each pic, there’s a few things: one which is important is that this blog is written by 3 people with vastly different tastes in fashion, so one of us may like sthg while the other may not, and plus like i said i do like the dress, but i dont like it’s white, that’s my own personal preference…and i agree it’s not bad to contradict the op of 250 ppl, i didnt say it was, i just said 250 people all can’t be wrong
comments can be subjective/objective but I think a sense of style is subjective!
and anon 2.39…i may or may not be of the same opinion as the 250 ppl, that’s besides the point…i do like this dress, just like you dislike it who’s right/wrong? who knows, who cares…each to our own, maybe cos i know of caroline’s personality and for me that shines through…and re “Just because one is a fashion show presenter of any show does not make them all knowing about fashion” i couldnt agree more, i didn’t say otherwise, i said she usually dresses quite well, she does the fashion show, she cant be wrong all the time…
anyway sheesh didnt know so many people cared about caroline’s dress..hey if you guys are interested we snapped her at another event Nokia young fashion designer of the year…if you want to check older posts…pic isnt great cos it was night but she’s more casual there…tell us what you think!
April 3rd, 2007 at 8:40 am
oh and there was no 2nd or 3rd, there were two awards: one for looking most stylish at night which caroline won (if you guys disagree let us know who you think should have won)- it was voted for by the attendees of the night
and one for the woman who’s been stylish all year round which Lisa Fitzpatrick won, voted for by the readers of VIP magazine (readership 30+)who runs the event…these women are all in the media spotlight, so people know what their sense of style would be all year round…
anyway the awards are catered for and are voted for people in their 30s plus or so i’d think and for people in the media (and by the media esp the Most Stylish of the night one)…it doesn’t
necessarily take into account for what a 20 sthg thinks or cares for which most of the writers and readers of this blog are so it’s safe to presume, the style of the night wouldn’t be what most of us would go for - i still salute the women to be daring and doing what they like…and im still proud of ireland that it has started to at least hold events like this..maybe they should have a younger version with less well-known people sponsored by a young mag voted by readers of that mag
April 3rd, 2007 at 9:17 am
Wow it is great to see my pic has sparked off such a lively debate, I too would love to know who you guys would have picked as the most stylish. In my opinion the dress did seem a bit weddingy, but i guess when you are attending a style awards you are free to go all out. I would have chosen the the pic of Miss Ireland, i thought the dress had a fabulous line and drape and made her look very regal.
April 3rd, 2007 at 1:58 pm
Meow, sparked a lively debate awright! Some seem to think that it’s a personal attack on tv presenter. As for comments ’she should know’ and ‘250 ppl can’t all be wrong a tad bit below the belt don’t you think. What if this award or similiar were held in say Russia, India or Romania for the sake of argument oops on second thought no perhaps this should be laid to rest.Amen
P.S Food for thought, anyone can with alot of money can buy expensive clothes but does that make them fashionable. BTW your street photos are fashionable and fantastic.

It’s kind of hard to pick a ‘winner’ here for a myriad of reasons. First off the styles were so varying. Some wore long dresses(with trains what is that all about pray tell?) Some wore short cocktail dresses and hey one even wore a wedding dress
My fav hands down for pure fashion and taking a risk (even tho it was white but it so suited her) was Rachael Allen in the Temperley sorry if sp is wrong)Simply gorgeous!! The cocktail dress on Laura Bermingham is such a superb fit. She wears the dress, it doesn’t wear her. What a brave girl to choose such vivid colour Kudos for taking the risk. Noticed that alot of dresses were ill fitting. Miss Fitz’s dress and I am not taking a swipe I swear, is too blingy and costumey perhaps more so than the ‘wedding dress’ but she wears it well and the colour is amazing on her . The hairdo is to old for her. As for Miss Irl pretty and hey I’ll just leave it that or you’ll think I’m a right brat altogether. Fashion lover and fashion deconstructor at large.
April 3rd, 2007 at 3:05 pm
Down with that sort of thing! (Irish joke)
Arsh is right in saying that the pics don’t do her justice. She actually has quite a dark complexion (for Ireland!) - dark hair, brown eyes, tanned skin - The dress is very costumey, I agree, but isn’t that the point of these over-the-top events? She wouldn’t have been my top choice, but she’s certainly standing out. Look at Patricia Fields! Style V Suitability. That’s a whooooole other debate!! Keep on postin’ y’all!
April 3rd, 2007 at 3:28 pm
Hey Coco,
Where’s the real fashion and style then!!! Just googled Miss C and watched a few clips of Off the Rails and this girl is way kewl love her fashion sense and love the fact that she’s not stick thin, from what i saw she rocks fashion which makes her choice of dress for award event very bizarre I’m just going to call this one a fashion miss.
April 3rd, 2007 at 3:39 pm
MISS PATRICIA FIELDS would not have put her in this dress which does not fall into category of style or suitablity, period. I’d bet my manolo’s on it. This is not fashion unless your in a part for Hello Dolly or My Fair Lady, all she’s missing is the parasol and a feather boa on second thoughts perhaps Miss P could salvedge the dress by styling/accessorizing it.

Linz,
going back through the archives and viewing the postings made by you, are you the photo taker? sorry if this seems a stupid question but they are very very good. The compositions are amazing you capture so much more than fashion, love the backgrounds in some of the photo’s I can get a sense of what Ireland is like and truly love the different times of day and that you take full length shots.Winning personalities show through of your subjects also none seem affected or full of themselves. Love Love the Olympia shots. Curious have you taken a course in Phtrgrphy.

Re who knows who cares comment. We do or else we wouldn’t be discussing this! That’s what a fashion blog is all about to strip down fashion good and bad, to give an opinion be good or bad without being made feel on is attacking the wearer.
April 3rd, 2007 at 5:33 pm
who would you put in Deirdre Brennan’s dress choosing from the attendees at the VIP awards, I actually think that the lovely Miz C could rock it don’t you think?
I liked the John Rocha dress also but trying to pick the best frock is difficult because they fell into so many catagories too hard to call it’s like comparing apples with oranges if you know what i mean
April 3rd, 2007 at 9:06 pm
anon 12:58 re: “As for comments ’she should know’ and ‘250 ppl can’t all be wrong’ a tad bit below the belt don’t you think.”
Actually no…i meant that in good humour/tongue-in-cheek.
Re anon 4.08 “Re who knows who cares comment. We do or else we wouldn’t be discussing this!” Im glad you do!!
Re “That’s what a fashion blog is all about to strip down fashion good and bad, to give an opinion be good or bad without being made feel on is attacking the wearer.” That wasn’t my intention, apologies!
April 3rd, 2007 at 10:20 pm
anon 1.39 I liked Rachel Allen too…she was my 2nd fave after Deirdre and Dillon, but the mainstream media gave her the thumbs down for wearing tights to a formal/glam event. I still think she rocked it
April 4th, 2007 at 2:02 am
Really, Deirdre and Dillon were your favs arsh can you exlain why why why? The dress is so ill fitting in the boob area and her hairdo is off, her makeup is so harsh but perhaps it didn’t photograph well and she may have looked stunning in person. The bag was so dissapointing too. I’m sorry but eyemakeup on a guy just doesn’t cut it either. These two get a thumbs down in my book. Like I mentioned previously somewhere anyone with a bit of dough can buy clothes and throw them on but cut a fashion swath methinks not.By the way what did you think of the Laura b frock, was it as good in reality as it photoed. Sorry for bad english grammer and all. Last comment for a while as am heading to Montreal. Sorry to be such a pain in the ass with all of this, but I can’t help myself. Happy Easter to you and yours don’t eat too many easter eggs or you won’t be able to fit into that bikini come the summer vaca. Moi
April 4th, 2007 at 4:11 pm
Hey Anon 1.02
Don’t worry we won’t come after you, enjoy Montreal!
Laura did look beautiful in the dress, bit shiny for my taste, but she looked fantastic. Thanks for all your comments, positive and negative, we really appreciate when people take an interest. We welcome everyones’ comments, especially when they pique such a great discussion. One little request tho, get yourself a screen name, will help us know who we are responding to
